Helping parents support their children based on the science of reading

Most children are taught to guess or memorize words, not DECODE them. Therefore it is important to assess if a child knows the rules of reading and can apply them to words they have never seen. Use this list of nonsense words to screen your child's reading skills. Each of the word lists are based on a set of rules; therefore, if your child is struggling with one or more lists, this may mean they need explicit and direct teaching of that rule before they can be successful readers

Decodable readers are books specifically designed to help early readers build their decoding skills by focusing on phonics and letter-sound relationships. These texts use a controlled vocabulary, where the words are composed primarily of phonetic patterns that children have already learned, allowing them to practice reading with greater confidence and fluency.
